Decoding the Black Box

27. January – 2. June 2024
Group Show, Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen, Sindelfingen

Stitch Incoming!!

25. March 2024
Curatorial, Speed Show at Web Cafe, Athens

Monday 25th of March, 7:00 PM at Web Cafe, Eptanisou 40, 113 61 , Kypseli – Athens

with:
!Mediengruppe Bitnik with Selena Savić & Gordan Savičić , Ingrid Hideki, Joanna Bacas, Kyriaki Goni, Maria Mavropoulou, Marina Gioti, Marsunev, Nadja Buttendorf, Theo Triantafyllidis

Curated by Aram Bartholl & Socrates Stamatatos

Speed Show lands in Greece, the country of souvlaki, the sun (yes we can claim that they originated a celestial body), ouzo, feta, an enormous financial debt. Currently, Greece is also trending for all the wrong reasons namely, gentrification, queerphobia, state crimes and more dystopic incidents.
As 2024 unfolds, we find ourselves amidst a whirlwind of confusion, bombarded with a cacophony of online horrors to consume, an attention span further abbreviated by TikTok’s algorithm and the barrage of incoming stitches.

Stitches Incoming serve as a conduit for creators to engage and converse, traversing from one topic to the next. They have evolved into a new social fabric, weaving connections within an ever-shifting digital and physical landscape while also serving as a testament to personal and collective traumas, both past and present.

What unites the participating digital artists? Perhaps everything and nothing simultaneously… Departing from the traditional Speed Show setup, where artworks are carefully stacked inside internet cafe computers, and drawing inspiration from the structure of TikTok stitches, each piece seems to propel the conversation forward, or perhaps uses the next as a springboard for its own narrative.

Stitch this and stitch that, we have everything you ever wanted (maybe) ! Are we stuck in an infinite loop of sh*tposting, valuable content, the highlight of social issues, personal and interpersonal experiences?
Maybe! Come and find out…

“Random Screen” at 5 minute museum

February 13, 2009

I’ll be showing Random Screen at

5 minute museum
Eindhoven, NL
March 5th – 21st 2009

5 Minute Museum initiated by STRP and art space MU is a special project room in the heart of Strijp S a former Philips factory location in Eindhoven that is being transformed into a cultural hub. At the moment industry has just left the site (leaving mostly gigantic monumental factory complexes empty) and young designers and artists are taking over. In this phase STRP and MU initiated the plan to begin a new museum concept that focuses on just one work every month that gets a space of its own of about a 70 square meters. Visitors must be able to experience this work in the most direct and individual way possible, being able to be grasped by it for at least 5 minutes or more.

hi jonathan,

thx for your detailed email and critisism.
i ve been in shangahi last october for 10 days and this was the most
interesting trip i did in the last years. i enjoyed it a lot. yes,
your people are very friendly. yes, you should be proud about the
accomplishments and yes the west has a lot of prejudice about china,
very true. there is a lot to learn about china and i recommended everybody to go there
https://arambartholl.com/blog/2008/10/take-trip-to-china.html

we a re not judging on the whole country and on everybody. there is
also cristisism on western companies on our page. it s not about
comparing who is better.

yes, germany has a dark history. we are quite aware of that and we are
not hiding that. but i hope we learned a lot from that history. and
exactly cause of that it is so important to take care of human rights,
freedom of speech and democracy. we are living in a globilized and
digitized era. its good to be interested in other countries affairs. it
s good to have constructive critisim on each other. because of the fact
that china does so well and is so big (and yes you guys definately doing
a good job in getting 1,4 billion people organized) it also gains a lot of
attention. when you are famous and well known a lot of people talk about
you and look very exactly at what you do. (same for USA). i think china
has to get used to that to some extend. critisism does not mean you are
bad! but i think there is also a big cultural difference in this
point and west is not quite aware of that.

on the other hand this whole project is an awareness campaign on how
important free internet is for the west. a lot of countries do censor the
internet (and china just became the best example). in europe
and especially in germany right now there are groups in politics
and currents who are trying to censor the internet, too. a free internet
is very crucial for getting things improved anywhere. the uncensored net is not
saving the world just by being there but it is a basic layer in the
digital age. we have to learn a lot on how to deal with the new
connectedness and there are fundamental changes going on in many fields.

maybe you wanna also take a look at the project i did in shanghai and
what my thoughts were then.
https://arambartholl.com/blog/labels/jumpnrun.html

i hope my response did made clear that we are not on a hostile mission
at all. i hope that western media becomes less snobish and prejudiced on
china. i hope the best for your country and all your people.

congrats! your english is much better than mine.

best regards
ARAM

“I'm a Facebook addict”

February 11, 2009

Will everybody have more than 10.000 friends and FB be useless in 2 years?
Will there be more videos and pictures in FB than on Youtube and flickr?
Will FB buy Microsoft and release a FB operating system?
Will people consider the Arpanet as predecessors of FB?
😉
Well, we all know its not gonna happen. I am not very convinced by the ‘eierlegende Wollmilchsau‘ concept in a single centralized hand. Do you have any idea how to extract all your data from there when it s time to leave? Where is the open source – peer to peer – my data on my server – ad free – social network?
The video is great! 🙂

SUPER SPY CAM !!!

February 9, 2009

More mirror interventions. People pay much less attention if you take pictures in public space with a mobile phone instead of a big SLR camera. But still, sometimes it is quite obvious and in some situations not very welcome. Here comes a 5 min project how to turn your mobile into a SUPER SPY CAM !!! (Evan! I wanna see better screen captures of the TSA plates x-rayed 😉

Public Hacking

February 7, 2009

Since I bought my new mobile phone in Shanghai I’ve no idea how to contact the ‘official’ support service in the streets of China. Nokia takes of course no guaratee here in europe. Why is our western public space not used like this any more? I bet it would just take 5 minutes to get a new speaker for my phone …. 😉
