‘How to DIY’

without comments

I am currently guest teaching for a week at the new media pathway of the Merzakademie Stuttgart. We have a lot of fun researching and discussing the huge field of DIY and How to’s. My favorite video of the day: IKEA BILLY. how to assemble the doors.

‘How to DIY’

Sharing Culture, ‘Do-It-Yourself’, and ‘How to’ tutorials. About the sense and nonsense of DIY. Youtube video how to’s and instructables.com as a new entertainment format.

What are the basic rules of the DIY genre and how did it develop in history? Which one are the best, funniest, most stupid and most useful ‘how to’s’? Where does the development lead to? What role plays Open Source and digital fabrication in this context?

How to’s for the sake of how to’s. Amateur, professionel and kids. Fame, views and hits. Fast and simple. 4 steps or 90 seconds. Teaching, sharing, show off and the technology driven society.

How to smoke smarties.
How to save the world.
How to order a coffee in Berlin/Vienna/NYC/Beirut.
How to build a bomb.
How to Sneak Into the Venice Guggenheim.
How to do a kickflip.
How to run a revolution in 5 easy steps.
….

Stay tuned for the results!

DIY Shin Guards

with one comment

As you might know Germany is quite crazy about soccer right now. On Sunday there will be the European championship final game Germany-Spain.

Of course the neighbour kids are playing soccer in the backyard all day long. One of them created these beautiful pair of bark shin guards. Nice!

„I.R.A.S.C. Infrared light against surveillance cameras”

with 2 comments

A simple DIY infrared headlight disturbs surveillance cams. I like this very simple but efficient idea. Any proposals for daylight non-IR cams?

The artists U.R.A. / FILOART will present this project tomorrow during Pechakucha night Berlin volume 8. See you there!

“Infrared light against surveillance cameras” is an infra-red device working as a protection shield from infra-red surveillance cameras. Everybody can rebuild this device without special technical skills.

I-R.A.S.C. is a device giving every citizen a reliable protection from governmental security measures. I-R.A.S.C. is security against security and therefore a response to the dissymmetry of the forces between state and individual. Instead of showing and interaction among human-beings, or between man and machine.

I-R.A.S.C. demonstrates an interaction among machines. This is part of absurd situation – while the time and effort invested into protection measures aims at the alleged safety of the citizens, the individual looses importance in this safety concept.
