Landscape Painting is a handcrafted four-color screen print depicting the iOS Apple Emoji „Framed Picture“ 🖼️. When you search for art in your emoji keyboard, it will appear as one of the top results. The 128-pixel PNG is transformed into a very low-resolution CMYK halftone printing grid, where the original pixels are fragmented by dots and diamond shapes within the printing grid.
Landscape Painting, a cliché of an artwork, a copy of a copy, represents the constant streams of discourse that impose ideas of value and meaning from the offline world into the online, distracting or setting unrealistic expectations of what technology is and what it stands for. The digital presents the illusion of a self-productive domain, infinite, capable of creating value without expenditure, unlike the reality of limited resources, time, and expense that otherwise govern all forms of value and production. The imperfect rendered image of a traditional landscape painting, distorted by the materiality of an analogue print, alludes to the once utopic ambitions of technology.
The artwork was initially exhibited and developed for the show „Ihr Paket ist abholbereit“ and was displayed on a DHL Packstation, as depicted in the pictures below.
