Die Stiftung Springhornhof wurde gegründet, um das Lebenswerk der 1998 verstorbenen Ruth Falazik weiterzuführen. Als Galeristin hat sie bereits in den 1960er Jahren aus dem historischen Spring­ hornhof einen Ort für zeitgenössische Kunst ge­ macht. Als spätere Kunstvereinsleiterin gelang es ihr, namhafte internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler in das Heidedorf zu locken, um neue Werke im Dialog mit Natur und Landschaft zu entwickeln.

Die obere Etage gehört den Künstlerinnen und Künstlern des Ensembles von mittlerweile mehr als vierzig frei zugänglichen Skulpturen und Installa­ tionen, das vom Springhornhof stetig weiter ent­ wickelt wird. Großzügig haben sie Fotografien, Skulpturen und Objekte für den Verkauf zugunsten der Arbeit der Stiftung zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Schau führt eindrucksvoll vor Augen, welche Band­ breite künstlerischer Positionen die Neuenkirchener „Kunst­Landschaft“ mittlerweile umfasst:

In the heart of the 21st century’s digital revolution, technological advancements are reshaping human existence—our lifestyles, thought processes, and societal structures. Underpinning this transformation is the captivating concept of the Singularity, a theory both alluring and profound.

The Technological Singularity, as envisioned by mathematician and computer scientist Vernor Vinge in 1993, designates a pivotal moment when machine intelligence eclipses human intellect. This event is predicted to trigger an exponential surge in technological progress, irrevocably altering the trajectory of civilization. The academic community further understands the Singularity as an inflection point where artificial intelligence reaches a certain threshold, catalyzing a cascade of technological disruptions and an „intelligence explosion.“

Grand Snail Tour

What is the Ruhr area? An exciting metropolitan region centred around the major cities of Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg? Or a collection of scattered towns and villages from Alpen to Xanten? Or both? Does it consist of tranquil river landscapes along the Ruhr, Emscher and Lippe or is it hopelessly damaged by the scars of heavy industry? Ruhrpott, example of transformation, poverty zone – how can art open up, change and enrich this diverse region?

Urbane Künste Ruhr wants to find out and is launching the Grand Snail Tour in autumn, an artistic-performative journey through all 53 cities in the Ruhr region. Because this is an ambitious endeavour and Urbane Künste Ruhr has set itself the goal of getting to know local players, forming bonds and establishing sustainable networks, this is a three-year project.

Urban Art Biennale

Staged at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks, the Urban Art Biennale is one of the world’s largest exhibitions of this anarchic form of art. Departing from a conventional white cube aesthetic, the entire site of the Völklingen Ironworks is given over to a fruitful dialogue with an art form that has evolved from street art or graffiti. Established in 2011, the 2024 edition will focus on participatory urban art projects as well as political works in situ.

The World In My Hand

The World in My Hand explores the smartphone as both object and aesthetic inspiration for artistic creation. It comments on public debates surrounding the many uses of smartphones: from always-on media consumption to digital detox, from swiping and matching to ghosting and blocking, from language atrophy to information overload, from resource depletion to status symbol.

The curators, Dr Jörg Garbrecht and Katharina Wenkler, have chosen a narrative approach to the exhibition. In eight chapters, they summarize various aspects and debates surrounding the smartphone, ranging from the launch date of our daily digital companion to its characteristic touchscreen and the contractions of time and space it enables. Deeply personal moments – such as Ai Weiwei’s selfie at the moment of his arrest or Sergey Melnitchenko’s photograph of his son during a blackout in Kyiv – appear alongside themes of perception and presentation of the self, as realized in the glass sculpture Stability by Julija Pociūtė. Other subjects include: looking for love online, as in Ariane Forkel’s Casanova’s Kabinett or John Yuyi’s Tinder Match; the complexities and pitfalls of digital communication, for example in the works of James Akers or Alejandra Seeber; and the smartphone as a means of staying in touch during pandemic lockdown isolation, for instance in the work of George McLeod. Edward Burtynsky’s photograph of lithium mines in the Atacama Desert calls attention to the topic of raw materials for electronic devices.

50 für Bad Berlin

For Berlin Art Week, the non-profit organisation Flussbad Berlin will be presenting the exhibition and auction „50 Für Bad Berlin“ in the Red Salon of the Bauakademie. Fluss Bad Berlin is a civil society initiative for urban development committed to making swimming possible in the Spree Canal and, in the long run, in other sections of the Berlin Spree.

„50 Für Bad Berlin“ will present works by mostly Berlin-based artists and architects who show solidarity with the objectives of the Fluss Bad Berlin project and the team behind it. They advocate a sustainable development of Berlin for the common good. They oppose the tendency to restrict for ideological reasons the debate on the future of the city (centre) to the historicising reconstruction of the Berlin of the early 20th century and the attempt to appropriate „art and culture” for that purpose. They want to emphasise instead that art and culture are closely linked to development initiatives such as Fluss Bad Berlin, which promote a more social, ecological, sustainable, and futureproof urban development.

While the works on display cover a wide range of types and techniques, they all relate to themes the Fluss Bad project addresses: for instance, in their interpretation of the essential significance of water for our world and for life, and the diverse relationships between humans and the element. They analyse the sensory, political and technical significance of water as a cultural asset, and the meaning of a free and equal access to it. They remind us that the river belongs to the city, that everyday culture belongs to high culture, and that the city is shaped by social values, which –at the same time– it is capable to mediate.

All of the pieces shown at the „50 Für Bad Berlin“ exhibition will be auctioned on September 12.

Social media algorithms have a preference for faces. People prefer friends to strangers and are more comfortable with the familiar in general. This preference applies to their own faces, too. Studies have shown that people like their mirror-reflected face most because that is how they are used to seeing themselves. “The selfie,” writes Nathan Jurgenson, “lets us share that mirror-view, what we see when contemplating our self, considering what we are.” Science is not yet convinced of what the critics are absolutely sure of: people who take selfies are narcissistic exhibitionists.

These days, when a person takes a photo to their plastic surgeon, it is of their own face. Smoothed and beautified by Snapchat and Instagram filters, it is the new ideal. Filters make people feel attractive. Masks and filters function as a barrier between the individual and the world, and people have always felt the need to change themselves by wearing makeup, getting plastic surgery, donning masks ,or using filters that simultaneously hide and reveal. Mask culture, thousands of years old, is currently undergoing a digital renaissance. Software-driven face-recognition apps on smartphones enable a new, shared experience of this ancient tradition. “The self one tries to express tends to be new, exciting, confessional, sexy, etc., because it plays as an advertisement. Identity is a series of ads for a product that doesn’t exist,” writes Rob Horning on digital identities.

In the early 1980s Lynn Hershman Leeson addressed the ways media changes the view of the self and promotes stereotypical norms in her series “Phantom Limbs.” Jeremy Bailey has been playing with floating, 3D objects in front of the camera since the early 2000s. The elaborate hardware and tracking programs he began with have now completely disappeared into the smartphone. Petra Cortright started using commercially-available webcam software with basic effects and folklore-inspired filters to create her series of YouTube portraits in 2009.

Now, a new generation of net artists is reflecting on the presentation of faces in the digital age. @AndyKassier, for example, explains in his video how to make the perfect selfie, while @jillianmayer gives tips on how to hide from surveillance cameras with makeup in her tutorial. @andypicci uses filters to criticise the desire for image cultivation in the era of social media and @johwska addresses the sort of beauty ideals promoted by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner every day. The @selamxstudio collective, in turn, shows what happens when a beauty AI does Kyle Jenner’s make-up.

Statement:

A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It often is political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance. [Wikipedia]

Manifestos have always played an important role in art movements. The tutorial for how to become a successful artist could be „Step 1: Write a manifesto!…“ Sometimes the manifesto itself becomes the art work, or in other cases the opposite happens. A kind of unwritten manifesto is in place, an art scene influencing and quoting each others‘ work with their own set of rules and aesthetic ideas. It also happens that an art work has strong manifesto qualities itself or that a single piece represents a whole generation of art. Computer code is by definition a manifesto, a set of rules which are interpreted by the machine. While we’ve been looking at screens and talking about the Internet, the physical manifestation of art work has played a particularly important role over the last ten years.
The very first Speed Show took place in Berlin in the summer of 2010. Six years later, after many Speed Shows world wide and a couple years break, I am very pleased to present the first Speed Show in Los Angeles. More than 20 artists, international and local, from LA, will present a wide range of art from classic works to brand new pieces. It is again an interesting moment (like in 2010) to take a look at the different generations of net artist, Internet artists, art under the influence of the Internet etc … A lot has happened since 2010. Different art scenes developed and moved on, the art world got closer to the Internet and Snowden drained our comfortable bath of naivety. LA 2016! Time for a new manifesto?

What is a Speed Show?
The SPEED SHOW exhibition series was conceived by the artist Aram Bartholl in June 2010. The basic idea of this exhibition format is to create a gallery like opening situation for browser based internet art in a public cyber-cafe / internet-shop for one night. The exhibition format is free and can be applied by anyone at any place.
The SPEED SHOW exhibition format:
Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on them for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to be on-line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser with standard plug-ins. Performance and live pieces may also use pre-installed communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video chat etc). Custom software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files are not permitted. Any creative physical modification to the Internet cafe itself is not allowed. The show is public and takes place during normal opening hours of the Internet cafe/shop. All visitors are welcome to join the opening, enjoy the art (and to check their email.)

The 3D Additivist Manifesto blurs the boundaries between art, engineering, science fiction, and digital aesthetics. We call for you –artists, activists, designers, and critical engineers – to accelerate the 3D printer and other Additivist technologies to their absolute limits and beyond into the realm of the speculative, the provocative and the weird. Morehshin Allahyari is a new media artist, art activist, educator, and occasional curator. She was born and raised in Iran and moved to the United States in 2007. Her work extensively deals with the political, social, and cultural contradictions we face every day. Daniel Rourke is a writer/artist and academic based in London. His work exploits speculative and science fiction in search of a radical ‘outside’ to the human(ities).

Jstchillin.org served as an online art gallery for a large community of net artists between the years 2009 and 2011. Co-creator Caitlin Denny published several essays, web works and manifestos to accompany the monthly exhibitions, as well as a primer to the site before exhibitions started appearing. The open tabs via browser represent archived and live versions of these net-manifestos, speaking to the link rot and obsolescence issues surrounding born digital archives today – especially those of online art communities. Caitlin Denny (San Diego, 1986) is a California based filmmaker, artist and archivist. A new “-ism” calls for sovereign expression in the 21st century, acronyms, typos, leetspeak, and kaomoji included. The manifesto was published by Dullaart through website error message of the art magazines frieze.com, flashart.com and artforum.com in fall 2015. Constant Dullaart is a former resident of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, living and working mostly in Berlin. His work often deals with the effects and affects of contemporary communication and mass media, both online and offline.

The Supreme Gentleman is a performance of Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodger’s final YouTube address, where he states that he will destroy all “you girls” who have ignored him and treated him “like a mouse.” He claims he will become “like a god.” Not long after filming the video and uploading it to the Internet, Rodger killed six people and injured fourteen others, before killing himself. Like the Oracle of Delphi, I wanted to channel “the god” and transmit/transmute his sick words through my body, the type he had objectified in life (blonde, white). Kate Durbin is a Los Angeles based artist and writer whose work deals with digital media, gender, and popular culture. Recently she was the Arts Queensland 2015 Poet in Residence.,

Each screen gives different perspectives as viewers follow Yung Jake through his night at the club. Viewers need to line up two phones to watch the video in full. The title “Both” refers to the fact that Jake wants to make both: art and hip hop. Jake, who got his BFA from CalArts, turned to the rap world due to frustrations with the art world’s inability to avoid talking about race. “Everytime I made a painting it was about being black all da sudden,” he explained to LA Weekly. “So I started making raps about pretty-hoe-bitches and suddenly blackness wasn’t an issue anymore.”

The central component of the work is its text – a simplified beginners guide to net.art, followed by DIY instructions on how one can become a net artist. Steps are listed such as “Preparing Your Environment”, followed by potential modes of working and genres one might adhere to for the production of successful net.art. Other sections include “What You Should Know”, “Critical Tips and Tricks for the Successful Modern net.artist”, and “Utopian Appendix (After net.art)”. Born on a Kibbutz in Israel and immigrated to the US on her own when she was twenty-two, Merav Tzur received her MFA from UC Berkeley and BFA from California College of the Arts. Her work has been shown at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Kroswork Gallery, SOMArts Gallery, SFPAI, A Simple Collective, and Root Division and in Israel.

2010 a montré l’impact de la culture Internet libre à grande échelle. Les gouvernements et les lobbies industriels s’évertuent plus que jamais à mettre en place de nouvelles réglementations et outils pour contrôler le net. L’Internet doit rester ouvert et neutre! Assurez-vous que votre vie (en ligne) ou que votre activité professionnelle ne dépende pas d’une seule grande entreprise ou de restrictions gouvernementales. Il est important de toujours remettre en question les structures du net et d’échapper au conformisme social qui empêche tout recul. L’art sur internet et les sous cultures du réseau jouent un rôle de vigie, questionnant au quotidien les failles du web et les industries numériques transnationales.
Nous sommes très heureux, pour le SPEED SHOW vol.5 ‘Open Internet’ – Paris,  de présenter une sélection d’artistes internationaux et d’exposer des pièces récentes, dont certaines créées spécialement pour „Open Internet „. Les oeuvres interrogent l’impact de la culture pop du réseau, de l’open source, des pratiques amateurs et des engagements radicaux pour l’Internet ouvert.

Repérez un cybercafé, louez tous les ordinateurs dont il dispose et organisez une exposition pour la soirée. Toutes les oeuvres des artistes participants doivent être en ligne (pas nécessairement publiques) et montrées dans un navigateur équipé des plug-ins standards. S’il s’agit d’une performance ou d’oeuvres en direct, elles doivent utiliser exclusivement des programmes préinstallés (messagerie instantanée, chat vidéo, voix par IP etc…). Les logiciels customisés (à l’exception des extensions de navigateur) ou les fichiers off-line ne sont pas admis. Les modifications physiques du cybercafé ne sont pas autorisées. L’exposition est publique et se tient durant les heures d’ouverture habituelles du cybercafé. Tous les visiteurs sont bienvenus au vernissage, pour découvrir des oeuvres artistiques (et pour consulter leur mail).

Le Monde.fr est un site qui détourne les pages du quotidien national de référence, Le Monde. Il permet à l’internaute de remplacer n’importe quel mot du site par un autre mot, via un site miroir. L’oeuvre questionne le vocabulaire médiatique, l’impact des mots, expressions et courants dans l’actualité. Marika Dermineur est artiste, co-auteur notamment de Google House, qui construit en temps réel une maison à partir d’images de pièces d’habitation trouvées sur Internet, membre du collectif Rybn, responsable d’Upgrade! Paris et commissaire d’exposition, dont la dernière Politique 0 s’est déroulé au Centre Niemeyer, siège du Parti Communiste français.

Caroline Delieutraz extrait ces personnages de leur univers d’origine pour les associer dans une fiction commune. « Figures de l’étrange, mi-humain mi-autre chose (animal, extra-terrestre, robot…), ils représentent l’altérité. Ici, ils forment une sorte de communauté d’êtres hybrides…qui ne cessent de s’auto-engendrer. » Caroline Delieutraz questionne l’identité numérique, les conventions cartographiques. Elle est membre du collectif Microtruc (http://microtruc.net/) invité en ce moment à l’espace virtuel du Jeu de Paume, qui imagine des dispositifs navigant entre espace physique et espace virtuel.

La page de recherche de Google, presque transparente et toujours légère (mais qui pèse lourd sur nos esprits par l’utilisation inconsciente et massive que nous en faisons) est défigurée par un détournement ludique du code qui remet en jeu nos attentes face à Internet.

La série Geogoo de JODI a débuté avec des mash-ups aléatoires d’icônes Google Maps éparpillées à travers le globe et se poursuit par un voyage automatisé dans Google Streetview. 2010 showed the full scale beauty of open Internet culture. Governments and industrial lobbies are trying more than ever to establish new regulations and tools to control the net. The Internet must stay open and neutral! Avoid being shut down by government and make sure your (online-) life or business is not dependant on a single large company or governmental restrictions. It is important to keep rethinking net structures to escape from the mainstream social vortex which is incapable of reflecting on itself. Internet art and net subcultures play an important role in questioning and deconstructing everyday web defaultism and global, digital industries.
We are very pleased to present an exquisite selection of internationally-known artists at SPEED SHOW vol.5 ‘Open Internet’ – Paris. A wide range of brand new art works created especially for ‚Open Internet‘ discuss the current impact of Internet pop culture, open source, minimal amateur and radical options of the Open Internet. A combination of excellent Paris-based, internationally-know artists and restless Open Internet advocates form the perfect base for a promising opening night at the awesome Welat cyber cafe Paris.

Assurez-vous que votre vie (en ligne) ou que votre activité professionnelle ne dépende pas d’une seule grande entreprise ou de restrictions gouvernementales. Il est important de toujours remettre en question les structures du net et d’échapper au conformisme social qui empêche tout recul. L’art sur internet et les sous cultures du réseau jouent un rôle de vigie, questionnant au quotidien les failles du web et les industries numériques transnationales.
Nous sommes très heureux, pour le SPEED SHOW vol.5 ‘Open Internet’ – Paris,  de présenter une brochette d’artistes internationaux avec un éventail de pièces récentes, dont certaines créées spécialement pour „Open Internet „. Elles interrogent l’impact de la culture pop du réseau, de l’open source, des pratiques amateurs et des engagements radicaux pour l’Internet ouvert. Un assortiment d’excellents artistes français et internationaux couplés à de fervents défenseurs du libre sont les ingrédients d’une soirée prometteuse au sympathique cybercafé Welat.

It was much fun putting together such a great selection of Internet / browser based art from a wide range of awesome artists of different net-genres and net-‚decades‘. 🙂 I am expecting around half of the artists to be present and I hope all you people in greater NY will come and see! Credits to EYEBEAM for having me as a resident in NY! Check also SPEED SHOW Traces which took place 10 days ago in Bucharest and was organized and curated by Silvia Saitoc & Matei Sâmihăian! The Super Niche could be a very big niche, a surf-club which is almost mainstream (?) or a sub cell of a extreme small niche of  a 1-visitor ever page in deprecated HTML oblivion. Learning from evolution the beauty lies in the absurdity of super niche solutions, of visual workarounds in every day life net culture. It’s time to create more niches! It’s time to superfy!

The SPEED SHOW exhibition format:

Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on them for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to be on-line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser with standard plug-ins. Performance and life pieces may also use pre-installed communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video chat etc). Custom software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files are not permitted. Any creative physical modification to Internet cafe itself is not allowed. The show is public and takes place during normal opening hours of the Internet cafe/shop. All visitors are welcome to join the opening, enjoy the art (and to check their email.)
